What you'll need
- Air fryer
- 4 pieces of chicken (your choice - thighs/wings/legs etc)
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 egg
- Salt and pepper
How to cook fried chicken in an air fryer
- Mix the flour, salt and pepper in a shallow dish. The amount of salt and pepper you use is up to you, but you probably want to use at least 1 teaspoon of each.
- Beat the egg in another shallow dish and put it next to the flour mixture.
- Dredge the chicken in the flour mixture. Then, dip the chicken into the beaten egg. Next, dredge the chicken in the flour mixture once again. Finally, put the chicken in the air fryer's fry basket.
- Set the air fryer temperature to 200°C/400°F and let it cook for 12 minutes.
- After the 12 minutes are up, remove the fry basket and use tongs to turn the chicken over. This will ensure that the chicken cooks and browns evenly. Cook for 12 more minutes.
- After the 12 minutes are up, check the chicken to see if it's crispy enough for you. If it is, then that's it. Enjoy! If not, cook for another 3-5 minutes.
Tips and Considerations
If you have the time, try marinating your chicken overnight (or for at least a few hours) in some buttermilk. This makes the chicken more tender and juicy, which should make this air fryer fried chicken recipe even better. You can add spices to the buttermilk if desired.
You can also try adding some other seasoning flavour in addition to the salt and pepper. A Tablespoon of Old Bay Cajun Seasoning, for example, adds a nice layer of spice to the flavour profile.

If you want the chicken to be extra crispy then lightly spray it with some cooking spray before cooking. This should only add a few extra calories but it will ensure the skin comes out nice and crispy.
Like with cooking any meat, you want to make sure it reaches a certain temperature to be adequately cooked.
You can cut a piece open and you should be able to tell if it's done when the meat is white and juices run clear or you can just use a meat thermometer. The temperature inside should be 80°C/165°F.
